The Gathering Ireland 2013

Starting New Year's Eve 2012 following the counting of the clock, Ireland called on its people scattered about the earth to come back to Ireland and celebrate what it is to be Irish.
With Ireland being one of the largest Diaspora's in the world, there is certainly plenty of potential to persuade many with Irish roots to visit their friends and family and even long-lost cousins back in Ireland.
Many communities, groups and clubs throughout Ireland will have the opportunity to share with the returnees and many visitors alike the very best of what Ireland has to offer as regards Irish culture, heritage, tradition, the sites, sounds, music, sport and business that Ireland has to offer.
Over 70 million people around the world claim their Irish ancestry and many of those may never have visited our fair shores before, so the Gathering Ireland 2013 provides the perfect excuse for Irish abroad to return home to the Emerald Isle.

Back here in Ireland many are invited to organise or arrange a gathering of their own in keeping with the spirit of event. It will be a chance as well for Irish businesses to network internationally and the tourism business will certainly benefit from the gathering.
Many are involving themselves with the Gathering such as Government departments, State bodies, local authorities, private businesses and the tourism industry. The Irish Gathering 2013 is also fully supported by Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland.
The Gathering Ireland was launched officially by the Taoiseach, (Prime Minister) Enda Kenny, Tánaiste (Deputy PM) and the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar in May 2012 and is being supported by Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland. It is said to be the biggest tourism initiative ever staged in Ireland.
The Gathering Ireland 2013 though is not without its critics such as Irish Actor, Gabriel Byrne who feels there is a disconnect with Ireland and its vast Diaspora but all the same he wished it well and only time will tell if the greatest tourism initiative in Irish history will be a damp squib or a resounding success.
I venture a guess though; knowing the Irish and their ability to have the craic agus ceol, (fun and music) the writer feels that any party or event organised no matter how large or small, will undoubtedly be a time to remember. As the gathering website says, "After that it is over to you. It is in your hands. Be part of it."
